Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya lecturer sacked over harassment allegations
Bhubaneswar(By Abhishek Mohanty): A lecturer of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar was dismissed from service on Thursday following allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards girl students.
Principal Bijay Kumar Jena confirmed that action was taken against Satrughana Samal, a guest lecturer in the Drama Department, after the institute received multiple complaints from students.
According to the Principal, at least 12 girl students submitted written complaints accusing Samal of misconduct. Based on these reports, the college terminated his engagement. Police have also detained him for questioning.
Samal, who joined the institute around six months ago, was accused of making inappropriate comments, improper physical contact, and allegedly seeking favours in exchange for academic benefits.
Earlier in the day, a group of students staged a protest on the campus and blocked the road outside, demanding strict action against the accused lecturer.
Taking cognisance of the issue, the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department deputed a three-member inquiry committee, headed by Special Secretary Deba Prasad Das, to probe the matter. The committee held discussions with students and college authorities.
Following the committee’s findings, the institute moved swiftly to remove Samal from service.
A female student of the University felt unconscious during protest against the incident she was rescued by police and rushed to the hospital.
