Bijuli Bandh: A Historic Pond's Restoration Faces Delays, But Hope Remains
by Sanjay Pattnayak
Bijuli Bandh, a pond dating back to the British era in Sundargarh town, has been a point of concern and debate for years. The restoration and development of this iconic site were initiated under the leadership of Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, the former Collector of Sundargarh, with a substantial budget of ₹30.42 crore from the Sundargarh District Mineral Foundation. The project officially began on October 11, 2020, with the goal of revitalizing the pond and enhancing its surroundings for public use.
However, despite the initial promise, the project has encountered numerous setbacks, causing frustration among the local population. To address these issues, a meeting led by the Sub-Collector on October 5, 2024, brought together local residents, government officials, and stakeholders. The discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration between the community and the authorities to overcome obstacles and expedite the completion of the work.
For many Sundargarh residents, Bijuli Bandh is not just a water body—it's a symbol of the town's heritage and a testament to unkept promises. While delays have stirred frustration, the renewed focus from both the community and government gives hope that the project will eventually be completed, offering a much-needed space for the people of Sundargarh to enjoy.
