Balasore, 3/7 (Krushna Kumar Mohanty) — A research team from the Indian Horseshoe Crab Research and Conservation Centre at Fakir Mohan University has proudly secured third place in the final round of a national-level hackathon focused on biodiversity conservation and climate change.
The grand finale of the event was held on June 30, 2025, at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata, as part of the 110th Foundation Day celebrations of the Zoological Survey of India. The Honourable Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Mr. Bhupender Yadav, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and felicitated the winners.
The participating team of students from Fakir Mohan University, led by Mr. Soumyaranjan Dash, presented a research-based model titled "Captive Breeding of Indian Horseshoe Crabs in Coastal Odisha." Their project highlighted scientific observation, community involvement, and education-driven conservation efforts.
This remarkable achievement was made possible through the guidance and support of Professor Santosh Kumar Tripathy, Vice Chancellor of Fakir Mohan University; Professor Bhaskar Behera, Chairperson of the Postgraduate Council; Professor Bishnu Prasad Das, Director of the Indian Horseshoe Crab Research and Conservation Centre; Dr. Bharat Bhushan Pattnayak, Deputy Director; and Dr. Niladri Bhushan Kar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biosciences.
The university expressed pride in this rare accomplishment, calling it a matter of honour for Odisha’s research and conservation community, and a powerful example of collective conservation efforts for the endangered Horseshoe Crab.
