Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das – The Pride of Odisha

Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, born on October 9, 1877, in Suando village, Puri district, Odisha, is celebrated as the "Jewel of Odisha" for his significant contributions to the state’s social, educational, and political landscape. Raised in a middle-class family, Gopabandhu received his early education in local schools and was deeply influenced by Jagannath Das’s Bhagabat.
Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his mother, wife, and three sons by the age of twenty-eight, he remained dedicated to public service.
Gopabandhu's educational journey led him to Ravenshaw College and later to Calcutta, where he earned M.A. and LL.B. degrees. In Calcutta, he fostered the Swadeshi spirit by establishing night schools for Oriya workers and engaging with the Bande Mataram group.
His commitment to education culminated in founding the Satyabadi Bakul Bana Vidyalaya, modeled on the Gurukula tradition, promoting liberal education, self-discipline, and nationalism.
Politically, Gopabandhu played a pivotal role in Odisha's statehood movement. As a member of the Legislative Council elected in 1917, he advocated for the amalgamation of Oriya-speaking regions, eradication of floods and famines, restoration of Oriya salt manufacturing rights, and the spread of his educational model.
His efforts led to significant educational advancements, including the establishment of new colleges and schools.
A respected legislator and nonpartisan leader, Gopabandhu collaborated with prominent figures like Gandhi and Lala Lajpat Rai, integrating Oriya nationalism with the broader Indian independence movement. He also served as the All India Vice-President of the Servants of the People Society, contributing to relief efforts and social reforms.
Gopabandhu Das passed away on June 17, 1928, in Lahore, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to Odisha’s development and Indian nationalism. His contributions continue to inspire millions, solidifying his place as a revered figure in Odisha’s history.
