Bhubaneswar (28/10/2023)/By Amrita Dash: Several lunar eclipses have passed us by in the past and many are yet to come.
Let us learn what a lunar eclipse is? When the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting the Earth's shadow across the Moon's surface, this phenomenon is known as a lunar eclipse, also known as Chandra Grahan.
Only when the sun, earth, and moon create a straight line during a full moon can it occur. Today is the last lunar eclipse of the year and it is a full moon.
The partial lunar eclipse will begin on Saturday, October 28, and continue till Sunday, October 29. The moon will fall in the penumbra shadow of the earth on October 28, and it will enter the umbra shadow region in the early hours of Sunday. Lunar Eclipse 2023 timing: The lunar eclipse will begin on Saturday, October 28, around 11:31 PM in India. And at around 1:05 AM on Sunday (Indian Standard Time - IST), darker part of the Earth's shadow or umbra will cover the lunar phase.
The lunar eclipse will begin at 1:05 AM and end at 2:24 AM — lasting for approximately 1 hour and 19 minutes.
Interesting fact: According to Odia calendar, the full moon of this month is also celebrated as Kumar Purnima or Sharad Purnima.
It is observed as the birthday of goddess Laxmi, the deity of wealth.
On this day, young girls in Odisha perform traditional rituals with the belief of getting ideal life partners.
