CLIMATE CHANGE WORKSHOP FOR JOURNALISTS AT HYDERABAD
Bhubaneswar(14/03/2024): The U.S.Consulate General Hyderabad, Voluntary Integration of Education and Welfare of Society (VIEWS) and Telangana State Union of Working Journalists, organized a regional workshop for journalists working in Telugu and Odia media on Climate Change Reporting.
The regional workshop was inaugurated by Jennifer Larson, Consul General, U.S.Consulate General Hyderabad, K.Sreenivas Reddy, Chairman, Telangana Media Academy, K.Srinivas, Editor, Andhrajyothi Daily and K.Virahath Ali, Genetral Secretary, TUWJ on Thursday.
The objective behind organizing the two-day workshop equipped vernacular-language journalists with tools and concepts to write analytical and research-based stories on climate change.
The aim is to enhance the media coverage around climate change and its impact on the society. The U.S.Consul General Jennifer Larson said that Journalists can provide in-depth analysis, investigative stories with facts and figures, and correct misinformation for the public.
Talking about the workshops, she said, "The prime objective of these workshops is to provide tools and techniques to Telugu language journalists that will help strengthen your reports and analysis on climate change issues.
We want to build capacity with journalists to provide detailed, in-depth, analytical pieces in local news ensuring that the readers and viewers are better informed about climate change and its impact on India." During the event, K.Sreenivas Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana Media Academy, emphasized the significance of educating journalists, stating, "Educating a journalist means educating society on climate change issues." “Media houses need to give more focus for strong issues relating to global warming and climate change.
Climate change is not limited to talking about politics climate.
So, it is important to find a link as a journalist to local climate issues in rural and urban areas,” said, Srinivas, Editor of Andhrajyothi. Speaking on the occasion, Uma Sudhir, Executive Editor, NDTV, who was one of the resource persons for the workshop, said, “Climate for Change in Journalism: Latest and Hottest Trends.
Skilling journalists on tool kits of climate change reporting in their stories with more accuracy.
The March 14-15 workshop was the last workshop of 10 workshops, with three each in the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and a total of 90 participants from reputed media organizations will benefit from the training workshop.
