EMPOWERING FUTURE MEDIA JOURNALISTS THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM
Bhubaneswar(16/11/2023): To foster awareness and responsibility among budding journalists, SwitchON Foundation in collaboration with Institute of Media Studies, Bhubaneswar organized a session on Environmental Journalism for the media students of IMS.
The initiative aims to empower students with a deeper understanding of pressing environmental issues through the lens of media education. Around 70 media students attended the session on Environmental Journalism.
The session provided media students with a unique opportunity to interact with Minati Singha, Assistant Editor of Times Of India, a seasoned journalist renowned for expertise in environmental reporting.
Through this engagement, students gained invaluable insights and perspectives at the convergence of journalism and environmental advocacy.
The enriching session aimed at fostering a generation of communicators ready to address and champion environmental issues. Vinay Jaju, Managing Director of SwitchOn Foundation said, “As media increasingly plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, SwitchON recognizes the importance of equipping future journalists with the knowledge needed to navigate the complex landscape of environmental concerns.” Minati Singha said, “I compliment SwitchON Foundation for organizing this session for media students on this very important issue.
Environmental issues especially air pollution and climate change pose a serious threat to the ecosystem.
I believe that it’s very important for budding media journalists to be aware of the environmental threats and think of interesting ways in which the environmental issues can be highlighted." "Today, climate change and the rapid degradation of the environment that we live in have become important for the student journalist to learn, to report about effectively.
There are no media schools in India that have a module planned with a focus only on climate change.
This seminar will help the budding journalists understand the intricacies of the problems being faced by our planet and report carefully in their profession," said Prof.Upendra Padhi, Director of Institute of Media Studies .
