SNEH in collaboration with Mercury Phoenix Trust hold solemn event to commemorate Hiroshima & Nagasaki Memorial Day
Bhubaneswar (10/08/2024): A mushroom cloud billowed over Nagasaki minutes after the atomic bomb named, “Fat Man” was dropped over by the United States Army Air Forces B-29 bomber, causing a heartbreaking devastation that wiped out an entire city on 9th August, 1945.
On the occasion of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Memorial Day, SNEH in collaboration with Mercury Phoenix Trust, organized a solemn event at its Youth Cell, to commemorate the tragic incidents and promote peace and harmony among the youth inhabitants in the Salia Sahi slum in Bhubaneswar on August 9, 2024.
The event aimed at raising awareness about the consequences of nuclear warfare and promoting a culture of peace.
100 young participants gathered together for the observance of this poignant day. In a moving gesture, Sudarshan Chhotray, Senior Journalist extended heartfelt condolences to the victims of this harrowing attack.
He emphasized on the organisation's ongoing commitment to empower the youth into achieving a world devoid of destruction and to reaffirm the peace message that never goes away. An educational and emotionally impactful documentary depicting the events leading up to the bombings, their aftermath, and the long-term effects on the survivors was screened by Swastika Sarangi, SNEH staff.
The documentary shed light on the horrors of war and provoked thoughtful discussions among the participants.
Two Youth Cell volunteers also shared their thoughts on the role of youth in preventing future catastrophes and the significance of fostering peace in the community. It was followed by a special peace dance performed by Youth Cell volunteers with the objective to educate, inspire and encourage participants to actively contribute to the pursuit of peace, harmony and brotherhood in the world.
Dibakar Mahali from SNEH encouraged participants to take a pledge that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster a culture of peace amongst themselves, families and their community.
