My first meeting with Theatre Maestro Ratan Thiyam happened two decades ago at Imphal when I organised the first ever Meet the Author programme there from NBT in association with Writer's Forum, Manipur. This morning he has left for his heavenly abode.
Ratan Da was Director and later Chairman, NSD. I have visited his Chorus Repertory several times during my tenure as Director, North Eastern Council, and have funded for its renovation. My friend Manoo Dash and I brought him to Bhubaneswar in 2019 for inauguration of Odisha Art and Literature Festival.
Ratan Thiyam had friendship with Amar Goswami from his early days in Indian Theatre at Allahabad. He came to our hotel when I took Amar Goswami for a Meet the Author session organised by NBT jointly with Writer's Forum at Imphal with Rajkumar Bhubansana and B Jayanta Kumar Sharma . It was our first meeting, probably in 2014.My friend Dilip Moyengbam, then Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Dance and Music Academy of Government of India was present when we met.I understood from their discussion that both of them once acted in the play 'Sooraj ka Satma Ghoda'( The Seventh Horse of Sun) of Dharmaveer Bharti at Allahabad. Later, Ratan Thiyam and his group of Chorus Repertory staged that in their thetre. So attached was he to this play that he preserved the thatched hutment used in that play for years !
Same was with his old car. He painted it for a play and didn't dispose it off for years. He was a real theatreman.
During his last few years, Ratan Da was sad in the ethnic violece between Maiteis and Kukis. He was critical of the BJP Government in the state because of this violence.
