Fame and Friendship

Manas Ranjan Mahapatra

There was a time when friendship had meaning. I had a dear friend, Sitaram Agrawal. It was half a century ago. Yesterday I saw in my dream,Sitaram's marriage in his typical Marwadi style. As such, Sitaram is married to an Odia girl, Namita, a singer, three and half a decade ago. They have two sons.

Sitaram Agrawal was my classmate in school. His father Satyanarayan Agrawala left Puri and settled at Cuttack after division of property.I met Sitaram in 1981 at their business organization Jagannath Electronics at Mangalabag. It was my period of struggle for existence at Cuttack.

Our relationship remained in tact. I sent a few of my lyrics to Sitaram when he started his venture JE cassette four decades ago. His business flourished.

One day a friend told me that he has listened my lyrics in form of a song. I presumed, it's Sitaram and wrote him a letter. We met at Balubazar. Sitaram took me to his new house, an apartment near Howrah Motors. There I met his wife Namita for the first time. Sitaram gave me a few of his cassettes and CDs. By that time, their properties were divided again and he started his new venture Sarthak Music.

I came back and listened to the cassettes. My lyrics was sung as a song by Sailabhama Mahapatra, a leading young singer. But, two of my lyrics were stolen and put in the name of one Dilip Raj Behera. I was shocked. There was no proof with me that those are my works nor I was interested to defame my friend. I just told my grief to my wife.

The story didn't end there. I had faith in Sitaram. May be his workers have done the mischief, I presumed. As such, I sent by post a few of my lyrics to his wife, presuming that no mischief will happen now. By that time, Sitaram had entered to film production.

More than two decades have since passed. Sitaram sold his Sarthak Music and stopped his business under the agreement for five years. Now, he has a new business under a new banner. I don't know what has happened to my lyrical poems that I sent to his wife.
