6th International Horseshoe Crab Day Celebrated in Balasore
•Demand Raised for a Dedicated Sanctuary and Inclusion in Primary School Textbooks

Balasore, 20/6 (Krushna Kumar Mohanty): The 6th International Horseshoe Crab Day was observed with enthusiasm at the Gopabandhu Park premises in Balasore, jointly organized by Nilarakta Kankada o Samudrika Jaiba Suraksha Mancha, ABC, Aranyak, Moon Communication, Ray of Hopes, Yuba Bikash, and Helping Society.
The event was presided over by artist Keshudas, Chairman of the Suraksha Mancha. Sudhakar Sethy from ‘Aranyak’ delivered the welcome address. Dr. Gobinda Chandra Biswal from ABC highlighted the ecological importance of the horseshoe crab, while researcher Upasana Pattnayak spoke on the urgent need for its conservation.

Abani Jena from Moon Communication emphasized the necessity to raise awareness among the fishing communities living along the coast. Other speakers included Rajendra Raut, Biroj Raut of Seba Foundation, Asit Dalai and Shubhasmita Bindhani of Yuba Bikash, Swastik De and Sasmita Majhi from Ray of Hopes, and Jeevan Sangram Mishra from Helping Society—all of whom expressed their commitment to work at their respective levels for the protection of the horseshoe crab.
Collectively, the participating organizations called for the establishment of a dedicated Horseshoe Crab Sanctuary and advocated for the inclusion of information on the species in primary school textbooks to foster awareness from an early age.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Agnisha Pattnayak.
