This temple is located at a historical place called Belur in Hassan district of Karnataka state.This temple is about 900 years old. 
The temple was built by the King Vishnuvardhan of Hoysal dynasty between 1106 and 1117. In the joy of winning the war in 1104, Vishnuvardhan started the construction work of this temple which was completed in 1117.

During the olden days, it was known as the "gatessea", meaning the "gateway to the sea".
