Eminent Odia author Padmaj Pal to Receive ‘Akshara Kathaakar Samman’

Renowned novelist and short story writer Padmaja Pal, admired among contemporary authors and readers for her craft in Odia fiction, has been selected to receive this year’s Akshara Kathaakar Samman 2025. This award, instituted by the literary wing Akshara of Prajapati, an organisation in Balasore dedicated to education and knowledge, is a prestigious state-level honour. According to Prajapati chief poet Prashanta Das, the award aims to recognise an eminent and accomplished storyteller or novelist from the state, while encouraging writers dedicated to Odia fiction.

The honour will be presented to Padmaja Pal on Sunday evening, 24 August, during a special literary gathering at the Atithya Conference Hall in Balasore. As part of the award, she will receive a cash prize, a citation, a memento, and a ceremonial felicitation.

A prolific author with decades of literary dedication, Padmaja Pal has published 21 novels and 13 short story collections, along with works in other genres, earning her a distinct place among Odia fiction lovers. Her notable novels include Durga Patanara Bela, Ama Samayara Duhkha, Paap Pari Nijara, Jara Nibaasa, Chhaileutani, and Apadebata. In short fiction, her popular collections include Nishiddha Aranya, Eagle Ra Nakha Danta, Uttara Purusha, Muhansanja, and Dhooli Dhoosarita. Her contribution to Odia fiction has been significant, and she is cherished as both a respected and beloved author.

Previously, the Akshara Kathaakar Samman has been awarded to eminent storytellers Aryayajna Dutta and Pradosh Mishra, informed Prajapati founder poet Prashanta Das, convenor Biplab Dasmahapatra, and editor Rajesh Giri.
