Heartbreak and Heritage: The Story Behind 'Chhi Chhi Chhi Re Nani

Origins and Composition

Originally composed and performed by the late Satya Narayan Adhikari, “Chhi Chhi Chhi Re Nani” was part of the 1992 album Baliphul.  Adhikari, a lawyer by profession and an accredited artist of All India Radio, Jeypore, was deeply committed to preserving and promoting Desia music—a dialect and folk tradition native to the Koraput region of Odisha  . The song delves into themes of love, betrayal, and heartbreak, narrating the story of a man who feels forsaken by his beloved, Nani, who chooses wealth over genuine affection  .

Music Video and Production

The music video features performances by Bibhuti Biswal and Sailaja Patel, under the direction of Manabhanjan Nayak.  Produced by Sitaram Agrawal and Namita Agrawal, the video was released under the Sidharth Music label.  Despite its heartfelt narrative and cultural significance, the song did not achieve commercial success upon its initial release in 1995.

-Viral Resurgence in 2024

In 2024, “Chhi Chhi Chhi Re Nani” experienced a viral resurgence, captivating audiences both in India and internationally.  Social media platforms were inundated with short-form videos, dance covers, and memes inspired by the song.  A notable instance of its global reach was a performance by a drum and trumpet band in Kuwait, which garnered widespread attention  . The song's renewed popularity sparked discussions about recognizing Adhikari's contributions to tribal music, with Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati advocating for a posthumous Padma Shri award in his honor.

Celebratory Recognition

Following the 35th Annual Day celebration of the Sambad's Rourkela edition, photographs captured moments featuring the artists and director of the “Chhi Chhi Chhi Re Nani” music video, alongside esteemed poet, lyricist, and music composer Sri Durga Panda.  These images symbolize the song's enduring impact and the recognition of the talents behind its creation.
