India has been declared Trachoma-free: PM Modi

New Delhi (By Abhishek Mohanty): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday in his monthly "Mann Ki Baat" radio programme highlighted that India has been declared free of Trachoma, an eye disease.

In the 123rd edition, the Prime Minister said, "I am delighted to share with you that World Health Organisation (WHO) had declared India free of Trachoma, a bacterial infection of the eyes caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It's a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, particularly in impoverished areas with poor access to clean water and sanitation."

The Prime Minister noted that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has released a major report revealing that India's 64 percent population definitely has access to social security. He said, "Nearly 95 crore people are benefitting from the social security schemes. This number was lower than 25 crores till 2015."

Recalling the dark days of Emergency and lauded the defenders of the Constitution, saying that during the Emergency, freedom of expression was abolished, PM Modi said, "The country marked 50 years of Emergency being imposed, a few days ago, and we countrymen observed 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas'. We must remember those who fought against the Emergency. This inspires us to remain vigilant to safeguard our constitution. "

He spoke about the importance of Yoga in life and stated that this year's International Yoga Day celebration conveyed the message of peace and stability.
