In the heart of Dandisahi village, Patamundai block, Kendrapada district, a legend was born on November 13, 1939 – Professor Gayadhar Rout. A name etched in the annals of Khordha's history as the guardian of the town, he left an indelible mark with his unwavering commitment to social causes.
Starting as a zoology professor at Khurda PN College, he ascended to the position of principal at Ramaamani College of Kantabaada. His influence extended beyond academics; when Khordha Praanaath College was built under the guidance of Praanaath Pattaniak, Professor Rout played a pivotal role.
Dedicated to social work and hailed as an adventurous fighter, Professor Rout drew inspiration from the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Lenin. A champion for teachers' rights, he fearlessly fought against the government, securing UGC scale pay for Odisha's college lecturers.
His legacy included the founding of Braahmani College in Kendrapada district, presidency of the century-old Khurda Club, leadership of the B.Ed. College Khordha Gurujanga, and the establishment of the Paika Work Ekadami in Khordha city. Revered as the Mahatma Gandhi of Kendrapada district, he served as the district president of the drug-free organization, advocating for a society free from the clutches of substance abuse.
As the leader of the All Odisha Teachers Association, Professor Rout tirelessly worked for the betterment of educators, ensuring they received their rightful monthly salaries. Clad in Odisha's traditional attire – white dhoti and kurta – he embodied simplicity with a commanding presence that resonated with people.
His ideals, simple living, and high thinking permeated society, leaving a lasting impact. Professor Gayadhar Rout, with his noble nature and dedicated thoughts, remains a beacon of inspiration and a memorable figure in the hearts of Odisha's people.
