On July 15, 2025, a CHRC delegation led by Advocate Pratap Keshari Das (Legal Advisor and Unit Head, Baleshwar), Prof. Prafulla Kumar Sethi, and Biswakeshan Behera (Secretary, Youth Wing, CHRC), met the Collector & District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, Baleshwar. They expressed deep concern over Soumyashree’s death, which they alleged resulted from culpable negligence and irresponsible conduct on the part of the Head of the Education Department and the college principal, Dillip Ghose.
Other prominent CHRC members who joined the delegation included Sadhu Charan Mallick, Sambhu Nath Mallick, Sk. Muktaruddin, Khagen Bharati, Pares Chandra Das, poet Sukumar Das, Nalini Das, Shrihari Singh, Ranjit Singh, Bhaskar Mallick, Prof. Srikant Mallick, Biranchi Narayan Rout, and Pradip Mishra of Bhograi.
Memorandums were submitted to both the Collector and the Superintendent of Police, suggesting measures for justice and preventive action. The CHRC urged the SP to assign an efficient Inspector or a senior Deputy Superintendent of Police to investigate the case. They also demanded the arrest of those students and college staff who allegedly instigated or abetted the victim to self-immolate.
During the discussions, CHRC members highlighted the alarming rise in crimes against women and appealed for stronger preventive strategies. They assured full cooperation to the district police in combating such crimes.
In a parallel initiative on July 16, Gopabandhu Mallick, IPS (Retd), Chairman of CHRC Odisha; Dr. Sarat Chandra Behera, senior journalist and life member of CHRC; writer and novelist Rashmi Roul; and Banashree Mohapatra, Secretary, Women's Wing CHRC and President of PURBASHA, visited SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The team inquired about the condition of another student from the same college who was injured while attempting to rescue Soumyashree from the fire. The Head of the Burn Unit informed them that the student is recovering well and is currently in a stable condition. The CHRC team appreciated the medical care provided and requested continued support for the injured student’s full recovery.
