Bhubaneswar(23/08/2023): The Odisha State Commission for Women on Wednesday registered a suo moto case into the incident in which a female homeguard was allegedly tortured by the wife of DIG Brijesh Kumar Ray.
The Commission has directed ADG (Crime Branch) to conduct a probe and submit report within 15 days.
The victim, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Cuttack, will be questioned after her recovery. Her treatment cost will be borne by the state government and her daughters will be rehabilitated, if required. A report has been sought from Angul SP.
Police DIG Brijesh Kumar Ray has been transferred to State Police Headquarters in Cuttack. Ray was serving as the DIG, Angul.
The female homeguard had brought torture allegations against the DIG's wife.
The homeguard Sairindri Sahu alleged that due to unbearable torture, she attempted to end her life and in the process, she lost her legs. In her complaint, she alleged that the wife of DIG Brijesh Kumar Ray was asking her to do too much physical work and used to torture her, beat her up and threaten her to take her job away. She didn't even allow Sairindri to take leave. She further stated that the wife of the DIG pushed her and asked her to go and end life somewhere when she refused to wash some clothes on a particular day. After hearing these words, Sairindri was mentally disturbed and went to the nearby railway tracks to commit suicide, she fell down while standing on the tracks due to the vibration caused by an approaching train. Her legs got crushed under the wheels of the train.
The victim, a widow living with her two daughters, said that she has informed her ordeal to the Homeguard DG in written on August 13.
On the other hand, DIG Ray has termed the allegations brought against his wife as baseless.
A petition was filed by rights activist Jayant Das with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking legal action against the DIG and his wife.
