Rooting for Change: Empowering Farmers with Green Solutions
Bhubaneswar(12/12/2024): For Rajiblochan Putel, a 45-year-old graduate-turned-farmer from Bagjhula village in Odisha's Balangir district, farming was an uphill battle.
With limited knowledge of agriculture and just 2.5 acres of rain-fed paddy land, Rajiblochan struggled to sustain his family. In 2023, despite his efforts and advice from his farmer brother, his paddy yield was just 39 quintals, fetching him a modest income of Rs 83,850 at the government’s procurement rate of Rs 2,150 per quintal.
Poor soil health and improper fertilizer usage made farming unprofitable. To make ends meet, Rajiblochan relied on selling milk from his two cows to OMFED.
However, frequent veterinary visits for sick animals drained his earnings, leaving him demoralized and questioning his future in farming. The Turning Point: A ray of hope arrived in April 2024, when Reliance Foundation organized an Agriculture and Farmer Awareness Programme in Bagjhula village. Rajiblochan was one of 30 farmers who attended the event, where he discovered the transformative potential of green manure, particularly Sesbania, a natural fertilizer known to enhance soil health. The program also introduced Rajiblochan to the Reliance Foundation toll-free helpline (1800-419-8800), a resource for real-time advice on farming and livestock management. Motivated by the possibilities, Rajiblochan received 25 kg of Sesbania seeds from the Agriculture Department, facilitated by Reliance Foundation.
He also actively participated in Digital Audio Conferences, demonstrations, and awareness programs on topics like soil health, fertilizer management, and crop protection. The Green Revolution on Rajiblochan’s Farm Rajiblochan decided to implement what he had learned during the 2024 Kharif season.
He planted Sesbania seeds in his paddy field and allowed them to grow for six weeks.
Before the main paddy planting, he plowed the Sesbania into the soil as green manure. This simple practice proved to be a game-changer. Soil Fertility Boost:Sesbania improved the soil’s organic matter and nutrient content, leading to better root development and healthier plants. Lower Input Costs: The need for chemical fertilizers dropped by 25%, significantly reducing expenses. Higher Yields: His paddy output jumped from 39 quintals in 2023 to 48 quintals in 2024, a 23% increase. Increased Earnings: With the government’s raised paddy procurement rate of Rs 3,100 per quintal, his income soared to Rs 1,48,800, a jump of Rs 64,950 from the previous year. Rajiblochan’s farm had transformed into a model of sustainable success. Reflecting on his success, Rajiblochan shared, "I have regained my confidence in farming and can now provide for my family with dignity.
Reliance Foundation has been a true partner in my journey." Today, Rajiblochan is an inspiration to fellow farmers in Bagjhula.
He actively promotes the use of green manure and sustainable farming practices, demonstrating their effectiveness in achieving better yields and reducing costs. Why Green Manure Matters:Rajiblochan’s success story highlights the critical role of green manure in modern agriculture.
Here’s why this practice is indispensable: Soil Health Restoration- Green manure enhances soil structure, organic matter, and microbial activity, reducing reliance on chemical inputs. Cost Efficiency:By substituting chemical fertilizers with natural alternatives, farmers can significantly lower their production costs. Sustainability:Green manure practices are eco-friendly and contribute to climate-resilient farming systems. Improved Productivity:Healthier soil directly translates to higher crop yields and better financial returns. Empowering Farmers:The Role of Reliance Foundation- Reliance Foundation’s initiatives were pivotal in Rajiblochan’s transformation.
Through farmer awareness programs, demonstrations, and their toll-free helpline, the Foundation equips farmers with the knowledge and resources to succeed. These efforts ensure that farmers like Rajiblochan are not just surviving but thriving, embracing sustainable practices that promise long-term benefits. A Brighter Future for Agriculture Rajiblochan Putel’s journey is a beacon of hope for smallholder farmers across India.
His success demonstrates that with timely knowledge, sustainable practices, and support systems, farming can be both profitable and dignified. As he continues to implement eco-friendly practices and inspire others, Rajiblochan envisions a future where sustainable agriculture empowers farmers and strengthens rural economies. Reliance Foundation remains committed to this vision, working tirelessly to transform lives and ensure a brighter, more resilient future for Indian agriculture.
