Bhubaneswar (By Abhishek Mohanty):
Odisha has received a Rs 10,928 crore allocation for the railways sector in the Union Budget 2026–27, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday.
Addressing a press briefing, the Minister said, "Railway projects worth Rs 90,659 crore are currently under execution in the state. Odisha is poised to gain substantially from the proposed East–West Freight Corridor, which will pass through the state and connect Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The East–West Freight Corridor will act as a growth catalyst for Odisha’s industrial and economic development."
Vaishnaw added that it would significantly enhance freight movement and logistics efficiency.
Rapid Expansion of Railway Infrastructure.
He highlighted that over the last 11 years, approximately 2,200 kilometres of new railway lines have been laid in Odisha—surpassing the total rail network length of Malaysia. This, he said, reflects the unprecedented pace of railway infrastructure expansion in the state.
Currently, six pairs each of Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express trains are operational in Odisha.
Vaishnaw also confirmed that the state has achieved 100 per cent electrification of its railway network.
He expressed appreciation for Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s cooperation, stating that the double-engine government under his leadership is ensuring faster execution of development projects, station redevelopment and safety measures
under the Amrit Station Scheme.
A total of 59 railway stations in Odisha have been identified for comprehensive redevelopment at an estimated cost of Rs 2,439 crore. So far, redevelopment has been completed at six stations—Cuttack 2nd Entry, Baripada, Barpali, Bimlagarh, Parlakhemundi and Talcher.
In addition, 632 flyovers and underpasses have been constructed across the state to improve rail and road connectivity. Under the Kavach railway safety system, work or tendering is in progress for 772 route kilometres, while 2,922 route kilometres have already received sanction.
