2,462 HIV-positive cases detected in Odisha by October

Bhubaneswar (By Abhishek Mohanty): Odisha has reported 2,462 HIV-positive cases by October this year.

To mark World AIDS Day, an awareness rally was organised on Monday at the Capital Hospital premises in Bhubaneswar. Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling flagged off the rally and highlighted the importance of early testing, treatment, and public awareness to curb the spread of HIV.

Health authorities stated that the HIV positivity rate has declined compared to 2022–23. Against this year’s target of 20 lakh tests, around 14 lakh tests have been completed so far.

Officials noted that mother-to-child transmission remains the leading cause of new infections in the state.

Among districts, Cuttack, Ganjam, and Nabarangpur have reported higher numbers of cases.

Ganjam district recorded 338 cases, while Khordha recorded 338 cases.

In Cuttack, 261 cases (classified under Category-1 for HIV prevalence) have been detected.

Nabarangpur recorded 70 cases and Sundargarh witnessed 121 cases.

Health officials emphasised the need for strengthened awareness, prevention, and screening efforts across all districts to further reduce infection rates.
