Balasore, Oct 28 (Krushna Kumar Mohanty): Noted poet and fiction writer Devdas Chhotray received the 46th Sarala Puraskar, instituted by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), which is presented annually for outstanding literary achievement.

The award, comprising a copper plaque and a cash prize of ₹7 lakh, was presented by eminent Hindi poet and writer Prof. Savita Singh for Chhotray’s short-story collection Matinee Show, published by Timepass Publication.

In addition, legendary Odissi musician and vocalist Guru Ramhari Das and eminent painter Baladev Maharatha were honoured with the ‘Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman’. Each received a citation plaque and a cash award of ₹2.5 lakh.

Presiding over the function, Trustee Mrs. Paramita Panda said that the Sarala Puraskar awardee, Shri Devdas Chhotray, has always earned readers’ admiration for his distinctive creative expression. “In his award-winning collection, he elevates the everyday truths of life to poetic heights—works that are both enjoyable and thought-provoking,” she remarked. “The Sarala Puraskar, founded by Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Mrs. Ila Panda four decades ago, has upheld the spirit of Odia Asmita by taking Odisha’s art and literature to great heights.”

Delivering the keynote address, chief guest Prof. Savita Singh observed, “Literature is created by human beings for their happiness and fulfilment. This happiness seeks beauty and social justice for all. Love lies at the centre of this creative pursuit. I am truly delighted that my favourite poet, Devdas Chhotray, has received this honour. His poetry enriches world literature and touches every reader with its depth.”

In his acceptance speech, Shri Devdas Chhotray said, “I do not write for any uninformed audience in whom I have no faith. I write for myself and for a few friends, and I write to ease the pain of passing time. I am deeply grateful to the organizers of the Sarala Puraskar for recognising my Matinee Show as a collection of short stories.”

The event drew writers and literature enthusiasts from across the state, marking a memorable celebration of Odisha’s literary and artistic excellence.

Founded in 1974 by Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Mrs. Ila Panda, the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) has been instrumental in promoting Odia literature and culture through initiatives such as the Sarala Puraskar (instituted in 1980), Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman, and Ekalabya Puraskar.
