Sundargarh, June 26:
In a significant development aimed at addressing the ongoing healthcare challenges in Sundargarh district, the local unit of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has submitted a formal appeal to Odisha Chief Minister Sj. Mohan Charan Majhi, urging immediate intervention to strengthen the functioning of the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) and the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Sundargarh.

The memorandum, routed through the Collector and District Magistrate, highlights three major concerns: the non-joining of key appointed officials at GMCH, the urgent need for specialist visits to DHH, and the lack of coordination between the two medical institutions.

According to the appeal, Prof. (Dr.) Subhra Ghosh and Prof. (Dr.) Sarada Prasanna Swain were officially appointed as Dean and Superintendent of GMCH Sundargarh through a government notification dated May 1, 2025. However, both officials have yet to assume their duties, leading to severe administrative and functional gaps in the institution. The BJD members emphasized that this delay is adversely affecting patient services as well as academic activities for medical students.

The letter also draws attention to the growing number of cardiovascular and neurological cases in the district, advocating for weekly visits by cardiologists and neurologists to DHH Sundargarh. Such arrangements, the party argues, would significantly improve healthcare access and reduce the burden on tertiary care centres like VIMSAR, Burla.

Moreover, despite being located just 1.5 kilometres apart, DHH and GMCH are reportedly functioning in silos, often leading to unnecessary patient referrals and underutilization of available resources. The BJD has called for administrative integration of both institutions to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of healthcare services.

The party has expressed hope that the Chief Minister will take immediate steps to resolve these pressing issues, ensuring that the people of Sundargarh receive the quality healthcare they deserve.
