52 OUT OF 207 CANDIDATES CONTESTING ELECTIONS HAVE DECLARED CRIMINAL CASES AGAINST THEMSELVES

Bhubaneswar (03/05/2024): Odisha Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 207 candidates, who are contesting in the Odisha Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase I to IV.
Out of 207 candidates analyzed, 52 (25%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Similarly, 37(18%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Two candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section -302) against themselves. Ten candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307) against themselves. Nine candidates have declared cases related to crime against women.
Ten (48%) out of 21 constituencies are red alert constituencies in the Odisha Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Red alert constituencies are those constituencies where 3 or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. It was found that out of the 207 candidates, 78(38%) candidates have assets worth more than Rs.1 crore.
