From Arsa to Parsa: Remembering a Super Gentleman of Politics Death Anniversary Tribute to Debendra Pradhan

By Suresh Kumar Sahoo

Former Secretary of State, BJP Part Office

On the death anniversary of Dr. Debendra Pradhan, my heart returns to countless memories that remain alive in the corridors of the Odisha party office. For many leaders he was a statesman, for many workers he was a mentor, but for people like me who had the privilege of working closely with him every day, he was something more profound, a rare human being whose simplicity and affection defined the true meaning of leadership.

During those years when I served as the office secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Odisha, I had the opportunity to observe Dr. Pradhan’s life very closely. From the smallest administrative details to the most important political decisions, his working style reflected discipline, humility, and deep respect for everyone around him. He never treated the party office merely as a political headquarters; he treated it as a family home where every worker mattered.

What I remember most about him was the warmth with which he greeted people. Whether it was a senior leader or a young karyakarta visiting the office for the first time, he spoke with the same affection and patience. His personality carried a rare combination of dignity and kindness that naturally attracted people. In an era when politics often appeared harsh and competitive, Dr. Pradhan stood out as a super gentleman, a man whose conduct embodied grace and moral strength.

Many evenings in the party office were filled with discussions about organisation, ideology, and the future of the party in Odisha. But these conversations were never rigid or formal. Dr. Pradhan would listen carefully to every worker, encouraging even the youngest among us to express our thoughts. He believed that a political movement grows stronger when everyone feels valued and respected.

The phrase that often comes to my mind when I think of him is “from arsa to parsa.” It captures the completeness of his personality, from discipline to compassion, from leadership to friendship. He was strict when it came to principles, yet extraordinarily gentle in personal relationships. Workers who came to the office with difficulties, personal or organisational, always found in him a patient listener and a caring guide.

His commitment to the growth of the party in Odisha was unwavering. At a time when the BJP was still building its roots in the state, he travelled tirelessly across districts, meeting workers and encouraging them to remain dedicated to the cause. Yet he never sought personal recognition for these efforts. His satisfaction came from seeing the organisation grow and watching young activists develop into confident leaders.

For those of us who worked alongside him, these experiences were lessons not only in politics but also in humanity. Dr. Debendra Pradhan taught us that leadership is not about authority; it is about trust, affection, and responsibility.

Today, as we remember him on his death anniversary, the Odisha party office feels different without his presence. But his values continue to guide us. The respect he showed to every worker, the patience with which he built relationships, and the quiet dignity he carried in public life remain an inspiration.

For me personally, he will always remain more than a leader. He was a guardian figure whose affection shaped our understanding of politics and service. Odisha will remember him as a great statesman, but those of us who worked closely with him will remember something even more precious, a truly gentle soul who treated every worker like family.
