BJP-led Odisha Government Withdraws Volvo Sleeper Bus Service from Sundargarh to Puri, Sparks Outrage Among Citizens
Sundargarh, November 10, 2024
In a surprising turn of events, the BJP-led Odisha state government has withdrawn the popular Volvo sleeper bus service running from Sundargarh to Puri. This decision has left the people of Sundargarh, especially elderly passengers and devotees visiting Puri, disappointed and outraged. The Volvo service, known for its comfort and convenience, provided a much-needed relief for long-distance travelers, allowing them to rest throughout the journey.
The decision to replace the sleeper bus with regular seating buses has been met with widespread discontent. Passengers now face a significantly less comfortable alternative, as the new buses offer only seating arrangements, making long journeys especially challenging for senior citizens and devotees who regularly travel to Puri for pilgrimage.
Sundargarh MLA, Sri Jogesh Kumar Singh, representing the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), condemned the move. In a telephonic conversation on November 8 with the Odisha Transport Minister, Mr. Singh had received assurances that the Volvo sleeper bus service would not be withdrawn, and the status quo would be maintained. However, the recent development has sparked confusion and frustration, as it appears this promise has not been upheld.
Citizens of Sundargarh have expressed their anger over what they consider a disregard for their needs. Many have criticized the decision as inconsiderate, especially given the benefit the sleeper bus provided to elderly and vulnerable passengers. In response, local BJD leaders have threatened to stage a district-wide strike, warning that they will bring Sundargarh to a standstill if the state government fails to reinstate the sleeper bus service.
The situation is rapidly escalating as citizens and BJD leaders call for immediate action to reverse the decision.
