Balasore | August 13 (Krushna Kumar Mohanty) Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday inaugurated the Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research and Innovation Corridor (OMBRIC) in Bhubaneswar — a visionary initiative aimed at fostering marine biotechnology start-ups, promoting innovation, and strengthening the state’s Blue Economy. The State Government has committed to advancing research and specialized training in this high-potential sector.
As one of the six partner institutions in the project, Fakir Mohan University has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to actively contribute to marine biotechnology research, innovation, and applied development. The collaboration involves the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Odisha, and the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
Through this joint venture, the university will support research, training, and incubation for the exploration, conservation, and sustainable use of marine bioresources. With Odisha’s 574 km-long coastline offering rich biodiversity, OMBRIC aims to generate valuable scientific outcomes with far-reaching ecological and economic benefits.

Speaking on this prestigious initiative of Fakir Mohan University, Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Santosh Kumar Tripathy said “It is both an honour and an opportunity to celebrate its unwavering pursuit of excellence and societal impact. OMBRIC strengthens our commitment to the ‘Lab-to-Land’ and ‘Lab-to-Market’ approach. Our focus will be on developing bioactive molecules, advancing bioremediation, exploring nutraceuticals, and innovating marine bioresource-based products. We aim to contribute meaningfully to Odisha’s economy, job creation, and environmental sustainability.”

The university’s role in the project will include Undertaking research and development projects in marine biotechnology, Offering advanced education and training opportunities for students, researchers, and young scientists, Providing incubation support and entrepreneurial training for local start-ups, Partnering with coastal communities for skill-building, livelihood enhancement, and environmental stewardship

Senior researchers at FMU emphasized that OMBRIC is not only a platform for scientific discovery but also a driver of social and economic transformation in coastal regions. The initiative is expected to position Odisha as a “Coastal Innovator” and play a pivotal role in realizing the vision of ‘Viksit Odisha 2036’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
