GNRC launches BoNT clinic for patients with neurological disorders

Guwahati, 13 August 2025: GNRC Hospitals, a chain of tertiary care super specialty hospitals spread over Assam and West Bengal, announces the launch of a Botulinum toxin (BoNT) clinic at GNRC Dispur campus for the benefit of patients with various neurological disorders. Dedicated to therapeutic uses of Botulinum toxin (also written as Botulinum neurotoxin), the initiative marks a paradigm shift from the popular cosmetic use of ‘Botox’ towards its proven therapeutic benefits in neurology. BoNT is a neurotoxic protein, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and it’s one of the most poisonous substances in its natural form. However, in controlled medical doses it’s safe, effective, and widely used across the globe for treating different neurological conditions.

Medical uses of BoNT include treatment for uncontrolled muscle stiffness and spasms (post stroke and post head injury), neck muscle disorders causing abnormal head position, chronic migraine, eye muscle conditions such as strabismus and blepharospasm and certain movement disorders. Globally recognized for its effectiveness, BoNT works by blocking nerve signals that cause abnormal muscle contractions, offering relief from pain, stiffness, and involuntary movements.

The BoNT clinic belonging to GNRC group of hospitals, which was established by Dr Nomal Chandra Borah in 1985, is managed by Dr Nabajyoti Barkataky, senior neurologist at GNRC Dispur, with support from fellow neurologists namely Dr Rupjyoti Das and Dr Alfarid Shahid Ali. Commenting on the special clinic, Dr Barkataky revealed that the BoNT therapy is a scientifically proven and safe treatment option for patients with certain neurological conditions. It can significantly improve comfort, mobility, and overall quality of life for the patients.

With this new service, the GNRC has strengthened its initiative ‘Universal Health Mission – Quality Healthcare for Everyone’ reflecting the group’s commitment to global standards of care and advanced medical technology for all sections of people in the society. Already received wide acclamation for its affordable health mission with community health workers (GNRC’s Swasthya Mitra in Assam), the GNRC (www.gnrchospitals.com) has now emerged as a beacon of hope & healing for patients in northeast India making a lasting impact on the region's healthcare landscape, said Mrinal Ali Hazarika, responsible for marketing and brand promotion of the hospital chain.
