People of Sundargarh Protest Against CM’s Statement on Uttar Odisha Bikash Parishad

Sundargarh, November 25:
In his maiden visit to Sundargarh, Odisha Chief Minister Sri Mohan Charan Majhi sparked widespread controversy with his announcement regarding the inclusion of Sundargarh district in the Uttar Odisha Bikash Parishad (UOBP) for its "overall development." The statement has created a ripple effect, with people from all walks of life expressing strong disapproval.

Civic leaders, social organizations, and political representatives of Sundargarh have condemned the CM’s statement, calling it “immature” and “unnecessary.” They believe such a move would undermine the district's unique identity and autonomy, and are determined to oppose any attempts to include Sundargarh in the proposed development council.

“We did not expect such a statement from the Hon’ble Chief Minister, who is otherwise known for his prudent policies. Sundargarh’s development needs are distinct and cannot be clubbed with other districts under a single umbrella. We, the people of Sundargarh, outright reject this proposal,” said a spokesperson for the district’s civil society forum.

The protest against the Chief Minister's announcement has gained momentum, with local leaders threatening an economic blockade if the government does not withdraw the proposal immediately. “If our concerns are not addressed, we will paralyze the government machinery by enforcing an economic blockade. Sundargarh will not allow its distinct socio-economic and cultural identity to be diluted under any such scheme,” warned a prominent community leader.

The sentiment resonates with many residents of the district, who view the statement as a political move that fails to consider the region's unique development challenges and priorities.

The Chief Minister’s office, however, has not yet issued an official clarification or response to the backlash.

As the situation intensifies, many fear that prolonged protests could disrupt normalcy in the region. The people of Sundargarh have made it clear that they stand united in their demand: the Chief Minister must retract his statement and acknowledge their autonomy.

Observers believe this episode is a test of the state government’s ability to manage local grievances and build consensus on developmental policies. Whether the government will take corrective measures or proceed with the contentious proposal remains to be seen.
