Balasore | 01 July | (Krushna Kumar Mohanty)–
While the government continues to assert a “zero casualty” record in the ongoing floods, a tragic incident has unfolded in the Basta region, claiming a life. Shatrughna Bindhani, a 50-year-old resident of Kalanda village under Edida Panchayat in Basta block, was swept away by strong flood currents and lost his life.

Over the past three to four days, the Jalaka River’s overflowing waters have thrown several panchayats in Basta block into crisis. Despite the fact that floodwaters—up to four feet high—were flowing over the Basu Chakurai road yesterday, local authorities had not closed the route to the public. As a result, Shatrughna Bindhani had gone to the Basu Chakurai market in the evening to purchase essential items. Tragically, while returning home, he was swept away by the gushing waters.

His family searched for him the entire night. This morning, with the support of media personnel, a joint team comprising NDRF, fire services, and local police reached the site. After an intense search operation, they recovered the body from a 20-foot-deep section of the river. The body was then sent to Basta Medical for post-mortem.

Upon hearing the news, Basta MLA Subashini Jena rushed to the hospital, expressed deep sorrow, and instructed the administration to expedite the post-mortem process. She also urged officials to immediately provide government assistance to the bereaved family.

The incident has cast a pall of grief across the entire Basta region.
