Demand Raised to Preserve Dhenkanal’s Traditional Kandhei Dance by Heritage Walk Group

Balasore, March 16 (Krushna Kumar Mohanty): On the occasion of the 35th Dhenkanal Heritage Walk held on the 15th, participants highlighted the ancient tradition of Kandhei Nacha (puppet dance) practiced in Raidihi village.

Around 30 heritage enthusiasts visited the village under the leadership of DHW coordinator Suresh Prasad Mishra. The art form was introduced in Raidihi in 1952 by Shatrughna Jena and Banshidhar Dhal, who were inspired by similar traditions in Ganjam.

At present, 17 Kandhei Nacha troupes are active in the village, each consisting of 8–10 artists. However, due to financial constraints and the lack of interest among the younger generation, this traditional art form is gradually facing a crisis of survival.

To safeguard this heritage, the local community and the organizers of the Heritage Walk have demanded that Raidihi be declared a 'Heritage Puppet Village.' They have also emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to preserve this valuable cultural tradition.
