Bhitarkanika National Park to remain closed for visitors from May 1

Kendrapara(Abhishek Mohanty): The Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district will remain closed for visitors from May 1 to July 31.

This closure is due to the critical breeding season of saltwater crocodiles. This is considered as a crucial period for their conservation.

The restriction aims at avoiding human disturbances during the sensitive period.

According to Assistant Chief Conservator of Forests Manas Das, female crocodiles become aggressive during this period. Most crocodile attacks take place in the nesting season. Forest guards have been asked to monitor the mother crocodiles, who typically lay between 50 to 60 eggs per nest and protect them until they hatch.

Locals have been barred from venturing the forest for activities such as honey collection and wood gathering, as these can trigger aggressive behaviour in protective mother crocodiles. Moreover, use of mechanised boats has been prohibited to reduce disturbances in breeding zones.
