The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has called for a bandh in the state on July 17 to demand a judicial inquiry into the death of Soumyashree Bishi, a student of Fakir Mohan College in Balasore. 

Schools, colleges, shops, markets and business establishments will remain closed. Vehicles will stay off the roads during the strike.

The decision to observe the bandh was made by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), with its president, Bhakta Charan Das, announcing the call for the statewide shutdown. The bandh is expected to bring normal life to a standstill in Odisha as people and various organisations extended their support to the bandh.
