Odisha government issues advisory to schools on heatwave preparedness

Bhubaneswar (By Abhishek Mohanty): Amid forecasts of intense heatwave conditions, the Odisha government has issued an advisory to all District Education Officers and school authorities, directing them to take immediate measures to safeguard students and staff during the summer months.

According to the directive, all government, aided and private schools must ensure a continuous supply of safe drinking water on their premises.

Authorities have been instructed to repair non-functional water taps without delay and maintain adequate stocks of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets for emergency use.

Schools have also been advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly during peak heat hours, and encourage students to carry personal water bottles.

Awareness campaigns on heatwave safety and preventive measures are to be conducted to educate students and staff about the risks associated with extreme temperatures.

The advisory has additionally been sent to Relief Commissioners, Collectors-cum-District Magistrates and Block Education Officers, who have been tasked with monitoring compliance and ensuring that the guidelines are effectively implemented.

The move comes as part of the state government’s efforts to minimize heat-related illnesses and ensure a safe learning environment during the expected spell of high temperatures.
