NIFT TAKES INITIATIVE TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE ABOUT IMPORTANCE OF BAMBOO CRAFT
Bhubaneswar (09/08/2023)/By-Abhishikta Samal, student of NIFT, Bhubaneswar): Bamboo and cane are among the oldest crafts of India. It is deep rooted in narrow streets of Odisha. Bamboo is a sustainable superstar.
It's lightweight, sturdy, and grows back quickly, making it a perfect eco-friendly alternative for construction materials.
The products made from bamboo are durable, resistant to rot, warping and are extremely sustainable.
But this beautiful craft is still unnoticed by a lot of people from our fast moving generation.
Our skilled artisans of Odisha are struggling to keep this craft alive.
Keeping this in view, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has taken an initiative to make people aware of this gem of craft, whose many abilities are still unknown to the world. A group of students of NIFT visited villages like Banapur and Biribadi of Khorda district, interviewed the artisans, documented the craft, listened to their problems and are now giving them a platform to promote the craft. The artists expressed that they are forced to purchase bamboo from outside at higher prices due to unavailability of the same from forests.
